The World Wood Day Foundation (WWDF) is pleased to open its Research Grant application window by the end of this productive year. WWDF invites applications from scholars and senior graduate students that focus on "wood and culture." Both ongoing projects and new initiatives are encouraged to apply. The proposals will be evaluated on their originality and scholarly excellence by a group of professionals from various disciplines.

The WWDF is an international non-profit organization that aims to raise public awareness on wood as an eco-friendly material, inspires academic research and promotes responsible wood usage for a sustainable world future. By carrying out its missions, the WWDF supports interdisciplinary and integral investigations into exploring how wood has played a prominent role in human life. "Wood and Culture" is a broad and encompassing theme that encourages a wide range of academic research. We cordially invite all those interested to participate in the great undertaking of this topic.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online by the deadline of 5 P.M., Greenwich Mean Time on Thursday, February 20, 2014. Submitting applications through email or mail will not be accepted. To access the application, please click here

The Grant is $12,000 USD for 2014-2015 and is renewable. The final decision will be made on March 21st, 2014, the annual World Wood Day (WWD). Grant recipients agree to present on the funded projects on March 21st, 2015. Fees for accommodation and transportation to the meeting venue will be covered by the International Wood Culture Society (IWCS). In addition to the presentation, they consent to submit a research article, after research has concluded, to WWDF by April 15, 2015 and to recognize the WWDF's and IWCS's support in any publication. The research articles will be reviewed by the board committee of the Wood Culture Journal ( Accepted articles will be further informed for future publication.

Interested applicants should complete online application, including an application form, curriculum vitae (with publications), three-page research proposal, and one-page budget justification narrative.All uploaded documents should be written in English in PDF files. 

The research proposal should clearly describe:

  • How the research project is related to "wood and culture"
  • Significance, literature review, preliminary research, methodology, and timeline

The proposal should be a maximum of three pages (single-spaced, with one inch margins, and in Times New Roman, 12pt size). A separate bibliography or appendix is allowed (three pages maximum). Proposals in inappropriate format will not be considered.
