(Beauchef 850, Departamento de Ingeniería Eléctrica)Abstract:
Atmospheric rivers are a dominant driver of water-related benefits and Hazards in Central Chile and the West Coast of the U.S. However, existing literature on floods caused by atmospheric rivers has primarily focused on the West Coast of the U.S. Much like the Western U.S., Central Chile has Mediterranean climate characteristics, prominent topography, and has experienced recent megadroughts and floods. In this talk, I will present some of my results on the influence of antecedent soil moisture in amplifying flooding on the West Coast of the U.S. I will also discuss my current project that compares atmospheric river-driven flooding in the U.S. to that in Chile. This project aims to characterize the storm and hydrologic conditions that result in higher, often damaging, streamflows.
