International Visiting Students
The Spanish Program for International Visiting Students is part of the University of Chile's International programs and is organized by the Linguistics Department of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities.
This program offers students the posibility of improving their command of Spanish, starting at a post-elementary level and extending through intermediate to advanced levels, while introducing them to the cultural background of Chile.
It is organized at 4 levels:
Spanish 1 (post-elementary)
Spanish 2 (intermediate)
Spanish 3 (post-intermediate)
Spanish 4 (advanced)
EACH LEVEL CONSISTS OF FOUR MODULES:
SPANISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES
This module aims at the comprehension and production of written texts suitable for each of the corresponding levels. Students will process and produce the vocabulary, grammar and text features typical of academic discourse.

SPANISH FOR COMMUNICATIVE PURPOSES
The aim of this module is to improve the students' communicative skills in order to facilitate their relationship with the social environment (home, school, services, etc.)

APPLIED SPANISH PHONOLOGY WORKSHOP
The objective of this module is to help the students with the processes of recognition and production of the phonological features of Chilean Spanish both for academic and social communication purposes. Some of the activities in this module are conducted in the language laboratory.(1 class hour a week)
GRAMMAR WORKSHOP
The objective of this activity is to offer the students opportunities for grammatical remedial work on an individualized basis (1 ½ class hours a week).
Each level of the program covers one academic term, comprising 75 class hours distributed along 14 to 15 weeks. There are 5 ½ class hours per week.
The Autumn term starts second week of March and extends up to end of June. The Spring term begins the lsecond week of August and extends up to end of november. (These dates are appproximate).
USD$550 (five hundred and fifty American dollars) per semester (March-June or August-November) for 75 contact-hours per semester, plus matriculation fees for US$215 (two hundred and fifteen American dollars) per semester.
On application to the course, students will be requested to sit for a placement test consisting of two components: an oral interview and a written exercise.
