Basic research projects

The University of Chile is the main Chilean Institution in scientific and technological research. The University is responsible for a third of the scientific publications and also for the implementation of a high percentage of competitive research projects in most academic fields, including basic sciences, technologies, humanities, social sciences and arts..

Publications

1.351 scientific publications in international journals (ISI), equivalent to 26% of all ISI publications from the 25 universities of the Chilean Council of University Presidents (CRUCH).

Competitive funds

A total of US$ 53 million were awarded to the University of Chile from public agencies during 2010.

Basic Research Projects
Natural and Exact Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities:

460 ongoing projects financed by the National Fund for Science & Technology Development (FONDECYT) of the National Commission for Science and Technology (CONICYT). Total funding US$ 24,3 million, equivalent to 34% of the Fund.

Centers of Excellence:

Financed by the Ministry of Economy

  • Millenium Institutes: 5 out of 9 Institutes approved countrywide were awarded to the University of Chile, in the areas of Ecology and Biodiversity, Cell Dynamics and Biotechnology, Complex Engineering Systems.
  • Millenium Nuclei: 7 out of 22 Nucleis approved countrywide were awarded to the University of Chile, in the areas of Biology, Informatics, and Engineering.

Financed by CONICYT

  • Centers awarded by the "National Fund for Priority Areas" (FONDAP) and "Fondos Basales": 10 out of 21 approved countrywide awarded to the University of Chile, in the areas of Material Sciences, Mathematics Modeling, Astrophysics, Cell and Molecular Biology.
  • "Research Rings" (association of three or more research groups) in Natural and Exact Sciences and Social Sciences: 10 out of 31 projects approved countrywide were awarded to the University of Chile.

Centers of Excellence total funding US$ 19,3 million, equivalent to 39% of the total funding.
