    Objective:

    The UK is currently in the midst of its most significant political crisis since the Second World War, following the fateful decision of the British population to leave the European Union in the 2016 referendum. The decision sent shockwaves around the world and has destabilised the British political system. In trying to fulfil the wishes of the public, politicians have divided the nation even further, following a polarising referendum campaign, and brought up fundamental questions about the future of the country. Since then, the UK seems stuck, lurching from one political crisis to another, unable to pass a withdrawal bill or develop political consensus regarding the future of the its relationship with Europe and the wider world.  This course, the first to be given in English at the IEI, aims to place Brexit within an appropriate historical context to understand its short and long-term causes, and to understand its troubled relationship with the European project since its beginning. It looks to identify the possible consequences that the decision will have on the country and how it will affect the UK’s place in the world.

    The course will ask the following:

    • What has been Britain’s historical relationship to the European project?
    • What are the causes of Britain’s decision to leave to EU?
    • What are the constitutional, political, economic, social and cultural implications of its decision?
    • What does the future hold for the integrity of the United Kingdom?
    • How does this decision affect the international position of the country?
